Haptic Buzz
-
I updated the day after it came out. Really felt no difference, although I rarely hit push back (happens right at 20 mph for me). I still haven't felt the buzz and if I never do, that's fine with me! I did crank up the acceleration and braking to +5 one time, but it was making noises like I dropped the clutch or something, so I backed that off after about 100 feet, lol.
Unfortunately, a day after that I woke up with some lower back pain (not OW related), so I've been off the board for about 10 days. Today, I turned up the acceleration, aggressiveness, and braking to +2 and the board seemed almost the same (I ride Apex), so I still have some playing around to do with the custom shaping. I ride mostly paved paths and smooth dirt/gravel trails.

So I'm on the VESC, and beta testing a haptic buzz for the VESC platform itself. I will say that after a while I block out the buzz, but I do sometimes feel it and it makes going fast or going over certain terrain feel a little more scary. I have found that the buzz from the motor does help with getting attention of passerby's and helpings them at least know that I'm coming from behind. My college has a really bad issue where people don't pay attention or they walk in the streets, meaning that it can be possible to hit someone in your car or on your PEV.
I would like to be able to at least customize, or at least see if I could use it to simulate an engine sound, but that's stuff for surfdado

i'm seeing people reporting in on Reddit that the haptic buzz firmware update is hitting the OG Pints. Anyone have one that can weigh in? I haven't fired up my app in a couple weeks, but i know that right about now is when to expect it to hit. Just curious from other OG Pint users what it's like...
-
@franko uh oh... only way ill be hyped for that is if they upped the speed limit on the ogp.
-
@franko I can confirm. My OG Pint brings up the upgrade screen. It covers the entire board page so even when riding you cannot see stats and you have to close the app to get off the page.
-
Presumably it's still not available for the XR? Do we know which is the latest "safe" version of the app that won't try and force a firmware update? I have turned off automatic updates in the play store.
-
@lia oh wow -- i will do the update, i'm sure, because i'm all stock to date and i'm not a fast rider anyway, so i don't think it will be a bad thing for me. but of course, nervousness remains...
-
Well, sh*t. Can't get out of this forced update, which will then presumably want to force update my XR if I do download it.
-
Ugh, same for me I just saw. Even with cellular and wifi turned off it's still forcing me to update. I'm just procrastinating the inevitable now it seems.
I'm also not a fast rider but like @Franko, the nervousness remains.
-
@blkdout I'm not 'buzzing' my XR! I'd rather ride blind...

:: What about "Airplane mode" and then "Clear Cache" on phone? Then launch OG app solely for getting 'handshake' for OWCE and carry on with OWCE thereafter in purpose of turning phone services back on during your rides.
Saw this tip somewhere over the reddit.
I'm w/ 4212/4150 @v.2.6.18 and so far so good. -
@theadman Is the firmware update for XR out? I thought Og Pint, PX and GT only for now.
-
@theadman The prompt is just for the app update
-
@lemur presumably the firmware will come with yet another app date which I will have no way of opting out of, then presumably if I do update the app it'll try and force the firmware update by refusing to let me use it until I do.
At that point I will just use something else and think about VESC for the future. -
-
@theadman I'm on a 4209 so a little nervous the firmware would block things like extended range batteries. Haptic buzz I could deal with IF it comes much later than pushback and is a truly effective warning you're getting to say 95% of the boards capability.

@theadman Yeah, that's where I'm at with it. If I update the app, the firmware is sure to follow. VESC may come sooner than expected.
@Sirgu I'm on 4212 hardware so I might be screwed lol. Last I tried OWCE it didn't do much for me. I'll have to try it again though just to see.
me too, same boat. 4212's are pretty much screwed without a new app.

4212/4155 - Yes, maybe.
4212/4150 - No, not necessarily .. (yet.)If they'd work out ways to original app start ONLY by seeing mobile data and/or WiFi being priorly active -- then we are all screwed. Since we can launch it in Airplane mode without it force self-closing down by any circumstances, well... Use OWCE and just forget Ride recording.

Quick note here. My XR updated last night, riding in mission mainly, I normally cruise around at about 15mph. I peaked around 16.5mph and still no buzz. All good. Note I have the Vega treaded tyre and it's a bit of a chunky tyre with great stability but it is noisy and creates a lot of drag so isn't the best tyre for speed. My speeds have been generally lower since the Vega treaded.
To test the buzz, I put the board in Cruz mode and sure enough I noticed the buzz but it didn't seem very loud in all fairness.
What with TFL Jeff demonstrating that nrf still works, the only worry left for me is can the battery be changed ? Mine is done at around 20% so still not needed for me yet.
Time will tell. -
@puzz360 It's getting to be too cold for me to ride here, so i haven't been on my board in weeks (i've also been stupidly busy), which is to say that i didn't do the haptic update on my Pint until last week. Took it for a final ride this past weekend to get the battery into the 50% range for storing over the winter, and everything worked fine. i never managed to feel the buzz, but i wasn't pushing it either.
