  • RE: GT 5" hub

@lia I recall a video where Jeff does say that the 5" hub on the street is more squishy feeling, especially if you dial down the pressure for trails. The Pioneer is supposed to be a great off road tire and "ok" on street, but again, worse so on the street with lower pressure. Due to my riding mostly street, I've decided the 5" hub is not for me, but "might" be interested in a 6". :)

I have the GOAT on my GT and the Thundercat on my GTS, but those are both 6.5" AND I ride 90% street, so not a great comparison as I am fully 10% body weight on tire pressure. What I do love about the Thundercat over the GOAT though is that I never feel a transition to the edge, it's just perfectly smooth, like you're riding on a ball, but then no squirrely-ness in the center. The GOAT has an, ever so slight, transition, so I'm definitely not disappointed. Both have really good tread though, which really helps side to side traction on pavement and trails.

You should've visited Sacramento when you were here earlier this year, I could've brought you over to meet Jeff and the TFL guys and you could've tried out all kinds of boards, hubs, tires, VESCs, etc! Next time maybe you can fit that into your plans. :D

@chippmover Great to hear you decided to pull the trigger. I was 59 in 2017 when I got my first board, the Onewheel +. Unlike you, I had plenty of boarding experience: as a kid on skateboards and an adult on snowboards. I've seen plenty of people with little to no board experience learn to ride, so don't let that stop you. I'm currently on my 5th board, the GTS, and have ridden over 17,000 miles on all my boards combined. The best advice is to be sure to gear up, as you will fall, and at our age that's never fun, LOL.

If you're patient and respect the board, hopefully you'll learn to love it as a daily adventure . . . I know I have!

It may quiet down as the tire wears, but it's not too loud as to be annoying.

Quick follow up with about 150 miles on the ThunderCat. I would say the noise level is about half what it was when new. On some surfaces you can barely hear it, but the hum is still there and definitely keeps me informed in real time as to my approximate speed. Overall, loving this tire, great grip both on and off pavement. :D

    Got tread?

So I hopped on my board yesterday for my birthday ride and my tire was dead flat. Must've run over something the day before. This was the OEM performance tire and it had just over 1800 miles on it. Still some wear left, as I ride mostly pavement, but was getting a bit angled on the edges.

Coincidentally, TFL came out with a new treaded tire, the ThunderCat, on Friday. So what is one to do when they live 6 blocks from TFL headquarters???

    ThunderCat on GTS.jpg

Took it out after the install (also needed a new power cable clip, didn't feel like I broke it, but one more trip to TFL to grab a nice metal one and I was good) and am definitely happy with my purchase.

This tire has some major grip, both on the pavement and in the dirt. I'm a 90% pavement rider, but also an ABC rider, so the hold on the carves is confidence inspiring and the transitions are buttery smooth. The tire is louder than the performance tire, but I kind of like being able to tell how fast I'm going just by the sound. It may quiet down as the tire wears, but it's not too loud as to be annoying.

It does feel a lot like the GOAT I have on my GT with how well it holds a carve and the dirt/gravel confidence. I actually took it through some loose gravel today and was able to carve, whereas on the old tire, I wasn't confident enough and would try to ride straight through gravel.

Anyone that likes the Hoosier T2 or the GOAT would be well served with this tire.

lol omg i would pay handsomely for a working pocket onewheel!

I know that this is all research for Lia's home board . . . I'd like one for each floor of my house, with the power of at least a GT, max speed of maybe 5 to 10 mph, and all cushy so it won't damage walls or furniture. :D

@notsure said in Cast 5" MTE hub now available from TFL..:

Cuz Jeff proclaims "Only for GT!" in the video

Yeah, pretty sure he means the GT platform in general, cuz they have the N52 magnets to pretty much match the GTS original hub.

Here's from the product page on TFL:

    For GTS riders:
We recommend the N52 which is nearly identical to the stock GTS hub performance. The N48 or N42 will also work but you'll lose 5-10% torque with the benefit being an even higher top speed if that's what you're looking for.

    And . . . they're sold out! :D

  • RE: Cast 5" MTE hub now available from TFL..

@lia Because I don't ride a lot of trail, maybe 20%, and even then mostly smooth dirt/gravel, I'm not sure I'd want to go all the way to the 5 from the 6.5. That said, the price difference of the cast compared to the CNC is VERY appealing.

I do like the FM performance treaded on my GTS and the GOAT on my GT, both of which are available in 6", I believe, but I'm in the same boat with you in that what would push me to the 5" would be if I could get either of those tires for it. I had the enduro and it was "ok", but it wore out fast (for me anyway) and just didn't have the lateral gripiness that I've grown fond of with the treaded tires.

Give me one of those 2 or even a treaded Burris (which I think might be available in 5") and I may not be able to resist pulling the trigger for the cast 5 for my GTS! Living right by TFL, I might even be able to get them to install it for me. :)

@jessejedi If it's the same as the Pint X, I really liked the Hoosier treaded myself.

Hopefully I'll get some cool pics and vids in a few weeks of people having a go with it.

    Hopefully very small people!
