GTS First Ride
-
I'll start off with a comparison photo, GT with the psycho tuna sticker and the TFL colorway GTS.
I couldn't believe it myself, but I can feel the weight difference when carrying the GTS down the stairs. I mean, it's only a couple of pounds, but definitely feels lighter.
From the second I stepped on and leveled out, I could feel the difference, it just smoothly balanced out, unlike my previous boards where there's like a little "catch" that balances you. I took it on my normal daily ride and, besides the range (which was showing 20 miles and turned out to be pretty accurate), almost the entire ride was improved. Sidewalk and pavement cracks disappeared, like I couldn't even feel them. I tried to not de-weight any bumps for the first half of the ride and it just ate up all the smaller bumps and powered right over the bigger ones, never losing grip at all.
My approx half mile off road gravel/dirt paths felt noticeably more confident. I wasn't as careful choosing my lines as it didn't seem to matter as much as it used to. Coming off the gravel back onto the path there's an inch or inch and a half bump to go up. I normally take that cautiously, but on the GTS I barely felt it. Perhaps part of that is the tire and part the available power.
On my GT, my highest ever speed was exactly 20.0 mph. Here's my ride results:
I didn't try to go 22 mph and was really just doing my usual "get up to a comfortable speed" thing. Was pretty strange glancing at my watch and almost always seeing 21!
I have a few relatively steep hills to climb, but they almost didn't seem to exist. And heading into the wind, I was like "what wind?". I could feel it, but it wasn't slowing me down at all. I actually hit my first high of 22.1 going against the wind.
Will try keeping the speed down a bit next time (yeah, right) to see if I can get more range, but what fun is that?
@notsure Really hope you get to ride your board. Would love to hear how you compare it to the XR.
-
@onedangts im coming from a stock xr, so im pretty sure it'll feel like a rather dramatic difference. its gonna be pretty chilly next week tho, so i fear it might not get much use this season.
-
@onedangts How does that new footpad feel? Would you consider buying them for your GT?
-
@biell I didn't like the concave pads on the GT and replaced them when the flats came out. So far, so good on the first ride. The front is very comfortable. I'm still undecided on the back one, though my feet almost felt like they were stuck like glue, so maybe the concave and higher kick aided in that. If I do end up liking them and keep the GT, I'll cross that bridge then, lol.
-
@onedangts that's really interesting!
Keep us posted on any new developments, I'm happy that you're happy with your board -
@OneDanGTS You West Coast Riders always get a head start on the game. I even ordered on launch day. Insult to injury, just like my GT, I have to let it warm up for a couple hours before its first full charge. It was delivered about an hour ago and felt like a block of ice. Here it is being cozy by the fireplace. No name yet and I’m opened to suggestions. I’ll share a better pic after my first ride.

@hanahsdax Woohoo! Can't wait to hear about your first ride!
-
This board’s maiden voyage was on what the local MTB riders call the “Connector Trail.”
And the first battle scar.
-
@hanahsdax gahhh, those mountains are GORGEOUS, and you already have snow on them! the first ding on the board hurts so much, i'm sure!
-
@hanahsdax WHAT
YOU LIVE NEXT TO THAT VIEW? -
@hanahsdax -- Sssssss...
(name suggestion)
-
I know, I said I was gonna try to slow down . . .
-
@hanahsdax Looks like TFL finally got the GT Bangs out but, alas, they are already sold out!
-
@onedangts Jeff when all the BANGS for GT sold out:
-
@loaffette I mean, I was in there on Tuesday and would've bought a set, but he didn't have them yet. So they went REALLY quick!
-
@onedangts how much were they? 100?
-
@loaffette They show $150! He has an install video and he explains why.
-
@onedangts Not a bad price honestly
-
@loaffette Agreed . . . considering he said injection molding can spit out a bumper in .5 seconds and these take 30 minutes each to make!

So in the first 80 miles, I've learned one really nice result of the torque. While at low speed, it feels comparable to the GT, but mid and high range, it allows much easier passing for my rides on the bike paths. And then when the road is wide open, it's almost scary how fast you can speed up.
I actually rode an ADV Pro at the park, it was one of the TFL guys boards he loaned out to a buddy. I was on it for like 5 min, but it felt to me like the GT, but I have no idea how it was tuned and I've been on the GTS. He tried my board and I told him to try some hills and he came back with a big smile on his face.
