    • RE: The new (unofficial) Onewheel Forum

@lia I think you picked such an important time, or Future Motion picked it for you by realizing the issues of managing a forum full of RTR hate and deciding to shutter it before that happened. Oh, did I just uncover the reason behind FM's decision to close the forums?

I'm mad at FM too, but all the hate and rancour over on Reddit (which used to be a happy place) makes me just want to hang out here, in this happy, safe place. I hope this forum stays this way for a long time. Thank you × ∞, for creating it.

    • RE: U.S. CPSC Statement on the danger of OWs

I posted to their webform: https://www.cpsc.gov/About-CPSC/Contact-Information/Contact-Specific-Offices-and-Public-Information/Information-Center

I am extremely dismayed by your recent statement release 23-046 on November 16th, 2022 entitled "Future Motion Refuses to Recall Deadly Onewheel Skateboard" which is factually inaccurate. Future Motion's onewheel devices contain no such ejection capability. A rider who runs into a wall, curb, tree, or other obstacle which stops the forward motion of the board will, it is true, continue their forward motion without the board; however, these listed failures are neither purposeful nor the result of negligent programming. And, the board is hardly ejecting the rider.

All sports carry inherent risk, board sports such as Onewheels are no different. But, the boards do come with hazard warnings far more informative to other board sports (e.g. Skateboards, snowboards, wakeboards, surfboards). The manufacturer of these devices also goes to great lengths to stress proper safety gear (especially helmets). Your notice mentions 4 known fatalities which, while tragic, were the consequence of riders not following Future Motion's recommended safety precautions; precautions so basic that they are required by law in 22 states + DC for children riding bicycles.

In the US, 3.5 people die on average every single day on bicycles. That is ~1,500 bicycle deaths for every every Onewheel death over the last 5 years. While I recognize there are plenty more bicycles than Onewheels, are there really that many more than 1,500 actively ridden bicycles for every actively ridden Onewheel in the US? I remain unconvinced that the death risk of riding a Onewheel is materially greater than that of a bicycle.

We all wish that the GT footpad recall had gone faster and smoother. I do not know if, in your release, you are directly referencing this recall as being unsatisfactory or if you are alluding to a greater wish for all Onewheels to be recalled. I fear from your title that it is the latter. However, that is mostly irrelevant because a full product recall is and was not necessary, and while consumers should continue to be informed about the dangers of single-wheeled personal electric vehicles (PEVs), they should be allowed to purchase and use them as they see fit.

Your attempt to persuade the American public from using Onewheels is entirely disingenuous if it is not combined with a statement of similar urgency and severity for Hoverboards, EUCs, Electric Bicycles, Electric Scooters, Electric Skateboards, Skateboards, Snowboards, Surfboards, Wakeboards, Motorcycles, and all Automobiles. Onewheels are as safe as any PEV can reasonably be, and the idea that the majority of Americans should not be able to enjoy these devices because a tiny percentage of riders fail to follow the well documented limitations which you are so annoyingly required to view before being able to connect your phone to the board is akin to saying all cars must be recalled because some people might drive them after consuming alcohol.

I have a very real gripe with Future Motion regarding my right to repair these devices. And, your statement makes it even harder for them to meet me half way. Their entire argument, capricious as it might be, revolves around their potential bad press from my own possible mistake in making a repair. With the CPSC providing such a statement, disassociated from reality and rational thought, you enforce these arguments within Future Motion, ultimately hurting the consumers you are pledged to protect.

By releasing this statement, you are telling all future potential complainants to keep quite, don't tell the CPSC about issues with your favorite products. They aren't here to help you get things fixed, they just want to take away your favorite thing. "Should I tell the CPSC about the issue with my car? I love my car, they might take it away." "Should I tell the CPSC about the issue with my electric baby rocker? What if they take it away, I might never sleep again." When we alerted you to concerns with Future Motion's products, we thought you were on our side, that you would help us fight the good fight. Apparently, we were wrong.

Furthermore, by releasing to the public such an absurd, baseless argument against the use of Onewheels and massively overstating the risk in a way obvious to even the most casual of observers, you are discrediting your entire agency. This is probably the most egregious error you have made as an organization this year. The CPSC is a critical safeguard for the public and must be trusted ultimately, beyond reproach. In making this claim, you have discredited each and every statement made by your organization this year. The American public has no reason to trust the credibility of anything the CPSC says heretofore.

I urge you to change course and focus on safety through risk education and mitigation, not through elimination. You would have to pry my Onewheels from my cold, dead hands; something about which, I acknowledge is a non-zero chance.

@lia said in Followup to the Onewheel XS:

FYI they’re actually all really cool guys 🥰

A company of Onewheel enthusiast engineers, whatever would you have to talk about 🤔

Remember that most companies, even the ones we disagree with vehemently, are filled with good people just trying to do the best they can to make their piece of the world as good as it can be. We can be upset with those at the top, but the rank-and-file are usually good people who deserve the same love and respect we would give to anyone.

    • RE: Whys of Falls

So, I have always been worried about one specific threat and been amazed that it hadn't happened. Would I be able to run it out, or would I go tumbling? It has happened in my dreams, and I always jolt forward so violently that I wake myself up to my bed shaking. And, so, I never learn if dreaming Bill runs it out.

Well, today it happened in the waking world, it took almost 17k miles, ... and I did run it out!

It was heck getting the motor plate cover (and I'm going to end up with two), but the GTR is complete.

GTR with a SLS/TechRails motor cover, 6" Enduro, Life Savers, Grizzly's, modified Foamies with CNR grip tape, and another attempt at adhering UHMW to HDPE being almost successful. The picture is taken in front of another project from earlier this year, to find a purpose for my old Burris treaded tires.

    • RE: Onewheel Trade In Program (Ends February 28th 2025)

@lia That's what I'm thinking, and I would be sending in my 4208 controller with the rails and BMS it came with. So, all the parts that might have a serial number would jive. So, I'd be OK. I don't want another FM board, but I might be willing to help someone else buy one if it means I can have them recycle my old stuff properly.

I didn't do this last time b/c I wanted to keep the motor. But, I have had enough overheating that I might be nudging in the direction of a superflux for my next build. In which case, do I really need 4 Hypercores? I wish they would give you half the coupon for a board sans motor. Then, it would be a no brainer.

    • RE: Onewheel Trade In Program (Ends February 28th 2025)

@lia Has anyone ever verified if the coupon code works if sold? Like, if I had more than enough parts lying around to put together a complete XR, could return the board, then try to sell that coupon code to someone looking to buy a GTS for like $600?

I guess I could just sell the board, to them. But, this method might be easier if the person lived somewhere else (no need to ship them the board).

    • RE: GT rails whats peoples opinions?

@wheelwizard I have a set of the standard GT WTFs, and I like them. A GT will never ride as nice as an XR platform board, but WTFs will at least give you the best possible ride for the platform.

Note, I also have standard WTFs on my XR platform VESC.

    • RE: New XR!!!!

@notsure Technically, yes, but practically, no.

Any conversion is going to have a loss component (heat). Stepping voltage down isn't so bad because you sip current to do that, but to step voltage up you need to draw more current, so you are pushing the batteries harder in addition to the waste.

This is why the car charger requires a 24v, 10A capable cigarette lighter outlet, but still can only slow charge the board.

    • RE: New XR!!!!

@lia From the specs, I'm pretty sure it is an 18s2p with 18650's in it, not sure who manufactures them. It is a great concept all around. The only three things about it I'm not super keen on are (1) they lowered it so the clearance isn't as good as an XR, (2) the name is kinda dumb and anything of the XR-G, XR-S, GXR, GT-XR, XR2, ... variety would have been better, and of course (3) it doesn't have my preferred VESC firmware.

I'll probably be recommending this board to people over the PintX or GT a lot now. Essentially, the only reason to buy a GT now is you need the extra range.

    • RE: VOW has done it again. Yet another amazing creation. A hub mounted controller and stacked cells either side 🤯

@lia It looks like after further testing there were some heat issues. But, when confronted with problems, Engineers just engineer around them.

And, so we have the improved V2 design. I actually really like what he did here because I wasn't too thrilled about the waterproofing in V1.

    • RE: Cast 5" MTE hub now available from TFL..

Maybe the brain trust here can help me out. I have a lot of questions about the MTE's and the various options. If anyone happens to know the answer to any of these questions, I would love to hear it. I was meaning to ask TFL, but if I can get some answers here it could help a lot of people out and help me write more knowledgeable questions to TFL.

      • Does an MTE (billet and/or cast) affect motor temperature in any known way. Probably not appreciably, but maybe they designed it with heat transfer in mind and it does a better job. It looks like the hub sticks out further past the bearing, this might be for heat dissipation, I don't know. Conversely, maybe the less external surface area causes it to be hotter. Maybe the aluminum is different, and they chose the one with the best thermal transfer. If anyone has ideas, please let me know.
      • Does anyone know if they plan to do a cast for XR hubs?
      • How do the Magnets affect heat (if at all)? N52 are torquier and slower. Do they take more, less, or the same amount of current? I would trade some top-end speed for torque, but not if I had to sacrifice range and increase motor heat.
      • Does anyone have a tire they really like for a 5" rim? I generally haven't liked TFL tires, so I'm not sure I would want to restrict my options.

Ever since the heat dome moved in, I have spent a lot of time between 75°C and 85°C and I'm trying to make that better, not worse. Thanks in advance.
