@s-leon I was a little underwhelmed too. But, it is progress. I look at it like this. I change my own bearings. I have never caused damage to the hall sensors. But, what if I did? At least, I could drive my board to somewhere in Philly or Jersey and get a new motor for a reasonable price. That enables me to perform my own maintenance, because if I mess up, I at least can get a reasonable replacement.

The biggest issue I see is that Onewheels are not sold on a commodity based pricing model, they are sold on a capability based pricing model. I don't believe it costs more than $800 to build an XR, and I don't believe it costs $400 more to build a GT than an XR. FM would want to ensure the component pricing model equaled (at least) the bundled price to ensure people don't try to scam buy the parts and build the rest themselves. So, we are talking $150 for the footpads, $55 for the bumpers, $300 for the rails, $550 for the wheel+tire, $700 for the battery box, and $450 for the controller.

@s-leon Hope the rest is helping you heal up. Wish I had more than just well wishes to give for it.

Jeff's vid for anyone out of the loop

It is a bit sad we have to babystep things to get what the community needs. The current ask would mean XR headlight issues requires an entire new controller for example which is insane D:

Jeff has further stated that the suggestion isn't even what they want but a compromise they're hoping helps more in the community.

In truth it will, those that don't have the skills, tools or confidence to repair their own gear are pretty much boned so this would help them. For us "unqualified" modders and tinkerers it'll be more of the same unfortunately.

I'm not sure what "tear down the walls" refers to though. From what I've seen a lot of the repair centred arguments have been pretty sensible unless I've missed anyone demanding pretty outrageous things from FM.

            @notsure I watched this earlier!
It's a good vid, 8:00 and onwards for those not interested in the VESC history and want to see what has been accomplished.

The accuracy in behaviour is really good and pretty impressive with just that tiny issue with nose dipping on repetitive bumpy terrain.

@notsure The future looks pretty bright from this. I enjoyed the whole video, history and all.

@biell lol yup, who'd have thought a little rainbow table would help so much, hmm?

and to think someone scoffed at me in the discord when i mentioned the same strategy. called it "brute force" lol... i call it effective.

@notsure I have been scoffed at for outside the box ideas so much, I just ignore it now. I gained so much respect for Dado from that video. He spent so much time developing his software, and is willing to admit that someone might have found a better way and change gears to explore it on a dime.

@biell I will be trying out the stock 5.3 firmware on my vesc/Pint with the Xml that Surf is talking about. I got the Xml from a friend in Germany and some of the settings are pretty wild. I tried it with Surf's V80 firmware and the board run good.
Surf confirmed that I need the stock firmware as his V80 firmware has safe guards against wild pids and other settings.
I'm always scared when I change something on the vesc and test ride in the real world for the first time.

@lemur i would use pads n a leash at least. i think overkill would be a zipline and climbing harness.

Kind of feels fitting to this old topic. Although this one is not official collab or whatsoever.

I were browsing this past newsletter by 'Onewheel HQ' and one odd fact caught my eye. One of their latest Instagram videos (also YT short) is featuring heavily modified XR for showing off onewheel capabilities on winter shredding. Basically this board is about ~75% of TFL's aftermarket parts in appearance. And just a motor hub their own.
I always had a hunch someone on FM marketing department takes good care of not letting any other aftermarket parts slip into their own social media. Or .. at least .. not to stay on focus for an undeservedly long time. Either it being their YT podcasts, short vids, IG clips, newsletter thumbnails etc.
(With really the only exeption being "FIRST FRIDAYS" hosted by Bodhy, where sometimes unedited videoclips sent by riders are presented.)
-- What you guys are thinking? Is this a slight move towards building bridges? Or FM just letting loose some of their fundamental approaches on marketing?

@sirgu I hope it's them building bridges. Rewatched the video at the top after and makes me wish for it. I know a bunch of them love the aftermarket stuff so I could see this being too good to not share.
But I'm definitely hoping it's a sign the company as a whole is opening up to sharing more custom stuff with third parties. I know they were still having issues with CPSC last I heard despite everything they did so maybe this is a good sign.

Honestly I'd love to see them sit down with the heavy and casual modders in the community to do a piece with them. Show off some of impressive mods like the amazing suspension builds @Lemur and others have done or the versatile boards @S-Leon has been using over the years still going strong from a variety of alterations ^-^

@notsure I was told despite the recalls, changes made like haptics and even more baked in tutorials they didn't think FM were doing enough which is crazy.
However that was June. I'm unsure if anything has changed since then.

I think FM learned their lesson. Maybe CPSC will call off the hounds.

I hope Kyle adds a few more degrees of freedom to custom nose angle. Sure would make some folks happy.

@LOAFFETTE Sorry for your experience! I know I'm bad at creating new topics instead of bumping the old ones. If the forum ever has one alike.

But on that particular case I thought the thrill about video ~3 years back adds some context to it. Because its "FM x TFL" discussion point. Interestingly enough Bodhy have swiched sides in meanwhile. Yet we still haven't seen Tech-Rails, Craft&Ride, Land-Surf and many other 3rd parties even slightly featured in FM's social media as TFL now has repeatedly been.
