XR badgersense (Where to buy!?)
-
Hello, your local crazy Texan is back
So, I've been up to some stuff. My OW's new top speed achieved this week is sitting at 23.8MPH. How am I not dead is a question I have not answered yet, but I'm happy to be alive.
I have been thinking about buying a Badgersense to go with my board so that if I decide to start going over the legal speed limit on my campus, I'd like to know how long I have before my face makes love to the concrete. (I.E, nosedive and my going face first into the pavement.)
I looked around but I couldn't find the badgersense or any clone being sold. Anyone know where I can get one?

@S-Leon here rides with one. Actually didn't knew the BadgerWheel have discontinued it by now (or just out of stock). Most likely developing on v.2.
-
EDIT: BadgerWheel has joined The Float Life !
@loaffette -- Hi. Yes, I use a BadgerSense on my leaderboard Onewheel Plus all the time, every ride. I also installed one on the OneDanXR. Watching the RED indication of how hard I am drawing on the battery has tempered my riding some. On the other hand, with it I feel confident pushing toward the limits. I have had my non-leaderboard Plus up to 24.4 mph with no drama... But... not paying attention to the BadgerSense at 25mph I was lucky to be able to get back up after a fall and slide, and continue riding... Safety gear and LUCK!
So... the BadgerSense can help avoid drama, but you have to practice using it. To me the rail mount was inconvenient, so I mounted the LED positioned like an erection in the front corner of the leading footpad -- much easier for me to monitor. The remote BadgerSight HUD (a separate purchase from the BadgerSense) can put the display right in your vision, but my eyes have trouble distinguishing the color changes -- to me the orange/yellow looks red, so even though mine is customized to show RED at 97% battery draw rather than at 92% draw I have not come into the habit of using it.
Where to get one:
BadgerWheel will likely be open again soon for business if you have patience. To prevent a damaging fall I might be convinced to part with one of my used ones -- with conditions: If you don't like it you send it back to me; if you wreck and damage the BadgerSense I get it back; If you don't get in the practice of using it regularly I get it back; if you use it enough to learn your board's limits and no longer need it, I get it back. And regardless, after a year you send it back to me... Or, you provide me with another one in working condition.@LOAFFETTE , If you are after speed for the thrill, try an EUC or a motorcycle.

@s-leon they had to eat the horses.

After my first major nosedive (actually, that was my second of only 2 ever) going 21 mph on my + and requesting a customizable speed warning via email to FM (yeah, right), I got a cheap Android watch. Since then, I can see my speed anytime I want and it really helped me learn what my top speed feels like. Found the watch so convenient that I now wear a really nice smartwatch all day.
I may not nosedive, but I find other creative ways to end up crashing into the ground!

@s-leon Hot damn
I looked into EUC's and motorcycles before the onewheel, but I chose not to go for them
Motorcycles were too expensive, had high maintenence and the insurance would have been trouble. In Texas, you are required to have insurance on your vehicles, it's against the law not to. EUCs were the next choice but I didn't think my campus would have been big enough for it. Back in dallas, yeah, it would have fit. But on a small campus in middle-of-Nowhere stephenville, would have gone across the campus. I want to be able to see how fast I'm going, but I'm not trying to go 23+ mph. Too dangerous for me and anyone on the campus. I already drive mainly at night when there's not many people.I'll have to think about the Badgersense offer
I'm a bit tight on money right now, and I need to wait until more money comes in or until I can get a job that works with my schedule.I'll get back to you on it though later
-
@onedangt How did you pull that off?
-
@loaffette If you're asking about the crashes, they are documented here and here. :D
-
@onedangt The android watch thingie
-
@loaffette Ahhh . . . there is a OneWheel app for both the Apple and Android watches. It connects to the app on your phone while riding and you can see speed, top speed, distance travelled, battery, and also adjust your riding mode (when stopped).
Since I have an Android phone, my first watch was a Mobvoi Ticwatch, cuz it was relatively cheap. I'm now wearing a Samsung Watch 5 since I got used to all the conveniences of wearing a smartwatch, like notifications of texts and who's calling along with the health monitoring features.

What a generous offer, @S-Leon! If I'd be US based, I would right off request in queue after @LOAFFETTE
I think I would pay for monthly rent, lol.
In my case I'd be not up to 'chase top speeds VS safety'. I'd like to observe how oversized tires affect the torque of og XR hub-motor and power drawn in some circumstances. -
@sirgu -- Sure. The BadgerSense uses power from your Onewheel battery, so there is no battery to ship. Weight is minimal -- an LED strip, a couple of positaps, a small and light "brain," and another small and light brain-like rectangular prism that fits inside the connector cover. I will have to look if I still have the clips to attach the LED to the rail.
-
@s-leon No need, I've got a 3D printer!
-
@s-leon
Yo!I'll take you up on your offer if it still stands! I can cover shipping no problem
-
@loaffette -- Loaning you the BadgerSense will be a process. Unfortunately the Badger website now redirects to TheFloatLife website. Luckily, I anticipated that that could happen and copied the BadgerSense instructions last week.
Let's communicate through the OWForum message avenue. Edit: I sent an email.Again, the reason I am willing to do this is to try to guard against your getting hurt by nosediving from pushing your Onewheel too hard or too fast. Indeed, I will want the BadgerSense back. My experience is that after using the BadgerSense a while you will have developed a fair intuitive sense of the limits. Of course, when and if you cross the board's limits crash is sudden and unforgiving. This loan is for your Onewheel only -- do not let it out of your possession, and do not allow anyone else to put it on their Onewheel... And please, do NOT scam me here -- I am seventy years old next week, and I am just trying to help you avoid injury.
-
@s-leon Understood.
Won't let anyone else use it or really touch it, and the system won't leave the Onewheel until I send it back.Also, happy early birthday!

Yesterday I got an email that LOAFFETTE received the BadgerSense, installed it, and was taking it out for a test ride. Included in the email was a photo of the LED strip mounted on the XR rail, all lit up blue signifying a full battery.
-
@s-leon It's on, and it works!
I've noticed that I've started riding a lot more confidently with the Badgersense on. I'm testing out different things and watching the output of the device when riding around at night. I notice that the motor actually approaches nose-dive when you push hard on the footpad when starting from standing still, as half of the green LEDs turn red, then slowly return to green, then to blue.
I find that I actually don't push too hard on the board, though I want to see where I get pushback relative to how close I am to nose-dive according to the badgersense.
Most of this testing is done at night so there are less people outside.
Installation was..
Terrifying.
I actually thought I was going to have to look into adding extra wire length or having to ride without the wire guard but I got it figured out! Did find out that one of my screw holes at the front side of the board closest to the motor is possibly stripped. I will look into re-tapping the screw hole for now, as Varial rails are +$500, which is super expensive.Like
I'm probably going to have to work a summer job to get those, or at least win the lottery or sell a kidney.
(There is a sale on the lifted tail rails on Float Life but I'm really looking for front and back clearance, not only back clearance.)I'll report back later with my findings when riding around for a bit. I'll have time off this weekend to test out the onewheel and badgersense.
Also, I noticed when I was installing the Badgersense system but all of the electronic parts were warped. The strip is pretty curved up and the box that goes near the motor had a weird warped edge. I think I may look into also 3D printing a case or guard for those if that poses a problem. I think it may have gotten rapidly heated then cooled during shipping.
Again, thank you to S.Leon for the set! I'll send him a generous amount of clips for the LED strip when I send it back!

@loaffette -- I agree, the BadgerSense inspires Onewheeling confidence because it shows you visibly when you are drawing hard on the battery.
Note, though, that it sometimes gives false readings: Slowing to traverse root ridged pavement I have seen it go full RED on more than one occasion -- when I've Onewheeled across those bumps hundreds of times before and since with no problems, ever. -
@loaffette -- As for the warped LED strip and the slightly malformed power box -- those were like that when I had them; it does not affect performance.
Again half RED is safe, it's full RED to avoid.
And the blue/yellow/red which shows at slow speeds is battery percentage. The single white, hard-to-read LED is speed.
