XR footpads into GT rails
-
@Samuraipunch if it is so much wider that needs a plywood or something, and is not just matter of doing holes in the rails, in my opinion it doesn't worth it. Just a simple mechanism to attach them would be sufficient, also if aesthetically is not too bad (thinking about putting a kush footpad (wide for the back and lo on the front) on top of the GT rails) . I was having the hope that wouldn't be needed.
@HanahsDax we need you!!
-
@ed_co The GT and the XR footpad are about the same width, but too many differences to be feasible or aesthetically practical. It better to print a blank GT footpad and add the sensors of your choice.
-
GT foot pads are symmetric front and rear, right? Because Craft and Ride announced their flat rear gt pad today I think. With that in mind, maybe it's got the notch cut out for the sensor wiring. Then you could get one of those, and not have to a janky looking front pad that won't ghost.
-
@samuraipunch No, not symmetrical, due to the funny ridge and the two different heights of the waffles.
I already looked into using my rear footpad as a platform for a custom front footpad, but not feasible without a lot of grinding and milling.
Someone in our local group was going to print a front GT footpad for a blank, but work got in the way.
The footpad in my picture is a brand new one that I may put in Fsr 406 sensors , but my original first batch GT hasn't ghosted once. -
@lemur First of all, thanks for the photos. I appreciate that.
I wanna tell why about this thread (in my horrible English, be prepared):
Background:
- I owned a XR with a lot of accesories. Loved it. Broke my clavicle, still loved it.
- I had to move back to Europe. I sold the XR and I bought a GT straight away + accessories.
- Back in Europe, waiting for the GT. Delays. I bought another XR while still waiting for my GT.
- I cancel the GT few days before getting it (I am glad), thinking I would buy it when all the problems are solved (kept accessories).
- Bought quite a bit of accessories for the XR. Footpads, tire, railguards, pint footpads for the sensor...
- Seeing the GT is not solving a shit, don't wanna buy it. The more time passes, the less I want to buy it.
- I am still love the XR. But, saw some limitations and the easyness of having a nosedive, as I nosedive again (very recently). Luckyly without any broken bone, but it was kind of serious. Without, at first, any apparent reason for the nosedive (aftewards analyzing we realized -Lia, MacIack and me- very low tire pressure, but even though XR nosedive easiness came into play).
I don't want to nosedive again. I want to solve it. VESC looks like the best choice, with less chances of nosediving with much more room. I don't do crazy tricks, don't go so fast, but still I nosedived, and this is not acceptable. Don't get me wrong, it is being a while that I want to get a VESC, but now is just a need and justified.
So, I want a VESC now, to overcome all the problems of the XR. I like the XR form factor, but my main concern: BATTERY. I want a 20s2p to maximize the VESC. But I want 20s2p 21700, and not 18650. Problem? XR battery box, even the extended one is not able to fit 20s2p 21700.
As you know, the new funwheel will be based on XR platform. So all the accesories of the XR will be valid for the funwheel.
Allegedly the new floatwheel will be the same, but with the GT platform. Allegedly compatible with the GT accessories.Still would prefer the XR shape -so slick, primitive but slick-, but GT platform has better boxes and space, which can accomodate a much bigger battery add I am sure a 20s2p 21700 will be more than feasible. And I have accesories (bumpers, fender...).
To take advantage of the accesories I invested for the XR at least I would love to use the footpads which I loved (kush wide as rear footpad and lo as front footpad: they are just GREAT), so I was thinking doing the VESC in the GT platform (using floatwheel rails, or other compatible GT rails) but with the footpads of the XR: so this is the main reason of the thread. I love this HYBRID APPROACH having the best of both worlds, as for now the XR aftermarket footpads are the best in the market. I don't like for example the Pint ones, and not liking the existing ones for the GT (and I would guess I will not like that much the kush for the GTs the same way I love for the XR). I could see today a new C&R rear FLAT footpad for the GT... LOL. People is not liking the GT footpads, and I think the XR Kush ones are FANTASTIC.
Obviously, if I could find out a way to make a decent battery box for the XR platform (just modifying slightly the bumper if required, but nothing else to keep it as vanilla as possible for the accesories) and be able to incept a 20s2p 21700, I wouldn't even think about the GT platform, I would prefer the XR one. Don't mind a big redesign of the battery box, if it ends up fitting that battery and not have to change XR accessories (except the bumper as I said). Don't want gaskets either: don't want to increase the height in any way. I know is HARD.
The same day I fell, still having the shock and being tired of the XR nonsense nosedives, I even asked @Lia (as we know about her excellent skills with her previous boxes design for the pint/pint-x) if she could design a proper battery box for the XR to be able to incept a 20s2p 21700 battery, and in this case I would keep with the XR platform. WHICH I WOULD LOVE 100 TIMES MORE THAN GT PLATFORM WITH XR FOOTPADS. But I think is a HARD mission, so trying to think in alternatives, like the HYBRID APPROACH.
The worse part and the main reason of getting a VESC now is because my girlfriend is starting feeling very scared (she was with me all the time I had to recover from the broken clavicle, which took a LONG LONG TIME), and I don't want her to feel scared or bad anymore, and I had to do something for safetyness, and I feel like now is the moment to do it. I feel the VESC now much more reliable than the GT at least.
Sorry for the big chunk of text just to explain such stupid thing but, I thought was a good story to tell. And why about this thread. Sorry, no TLDR.

@ed_co Good idea!
Full disclosure... I've had my worst nose dives with the vesc Pint and Xr/Plus platform. Every time I load new firmware or change parameters in the app, I ride with clenched cheeks. Haha.
I have broken drywall, burnout marks on the hardwood and carpets, but it all in a good cause.
I just ordered the 100v Ubox, Superflux motor and the Thunder rails to build a high end vesc board as that field weakening is a thing , but still bugs to be work out with that feature. -
@lemur could you please put the XR footpads on top of the GT Rails and do some photos and see how it fits around? Extra points if you have any kush footpad...
-
@ed_co The pictures are deceiving because the footpads are close in size.
The GT pad is stack on the Kush lo that I'm finishing up for a friend. -

-
@ed_co I'll get a picture tomorrow.
-
@ed_co @Samuraipunch Sorry guys looks like I was late to the party but Lemur has us covered and probably has more useful information to share.
-
Well, knowing that the floatwheel will not be compatiblw with GT accessories, I am out of this possibility, I was having hopes about the rails, but not anymore. I am not interested on GT platform as it is very expensive to get third party rails... :(
-
My only hope now is to be able to some day get a batterybox that can store 20s2p 21700 batteries, being safe enough. Which I am not sure if I have to throw the towel. Maybe I have to.
-
@ed_co Has anyone managed to come close to fitting 20s2p into an XR battery pack, especially 21700?
That pack would probably have to be longer than the stock pack or taller like it is in the GT. -

That pack would probably have to be longer than the stock pack or taller like it is in the GT.Igor Samul did it (the one who made the TORque box, well didn't made it, order someone to made, I have the .stl file BTW -maybe not the final one but almost-):
https://www.facebook.com/groups/231469878541536/permalink/577012303987290/
He was able to put a 20s2p in a printed TORque box (as I said I have one .stl almost like his final version), but taking advantage of the space where the BMS is. Even though have to be a much better way with a much better design.Taller will fuck up the XR stance, and as I said, a gasket is not an option. It will just dismissed the purpose of the XR platform. What no one ever tried, is going crazy about the shape of the box. Always tryinng to fulfill exactly the same shape of the original. Maybe there are other ways to make it work, in the same volume but slightly different.
The other day I thought:
Maybe getting rid of the blue holes and making them differently... Being flat, it will have much more space. Maybe there are more ways to close the lid...
Maybe another kind of design more in line with the Pint-X... don't know...
I know how hard is the task. That's why I think maybe I just have to throw the towel.

@ed_co The Kush lo is back on my Xr, but here's a wood XR rear on the GT rails over the controller.
The controller is abou t 2.5mm higher than the rails. -
@lemur thanks for the photos man
Would love to see that with the bumper around, and how the footpad fits around, if looks bad...
To overcome the 2.5mm would be pretty easy with a 2.5 gastket.. this is not a problem I guess. -
Just going to say "you don't really need a gasket"... If you're willing to RTV it shut... Just goop it on the top edge, and plop the lid on. You can always go around the outside edge of the box too, and if you don't do the slide in/out method of disassembly and go for a straight pull off the rail it'll be fine. I run a small bead of silicone along the inside of my rails like this for an extra bit of sealing.
-
@ed_co Doable with a wooden footpad or a stiff printed XR style footpad, but a Kush would need a stiffener underneath.
-
@lemur I am fine with a thin stiff plank underneath
I just hope the proper XR battery box could be a reality one day. Wouldn't care anymore about GT platform.
