The Onewheel Podcast

@blkdout choosing solutions to complex problems is difficult. investors are savages. nothing about a fat wallet requires intelligence or decorum! 'legal' is at their whim as well. u have to articulate value n it can be very nebulous at times, but it's important not to over-leverage oneself in the first place.
if margin is an issue, u cut costs. if sales are an issue, u market. if quality is an issue, u provide servicing options. then u iterate on ur processes.
my impression is fm has resisted cutting costs bc of the obvious implications. CA is expensive in comparison to a warehouse in Illinois. so there's knock-on effects. they offer fewer service options, they don't market as vigorously, they rely more on profit scheming rather than value generation...
the more ppl use similar products, the more value the overall economy develops. so long as u can maintain a reasonable tether to that growth, ur maximizing ur value with minimal effort. as the patent holder, its the lowest state of energy. let the economy develop, reap the rewards n acquire the best assets...
the second u start fucking with shit, u exact a response. sometimes that response is damn near anaphylaxis, n u lose half ur appeal overnight. sound familiar? i was a latecomer by comparison. i was honestly shocked by how quiet their forum was when i joined up in late 2020! i had to write a service ticket to get them to verify my account first lol... i found out why...

The races had me thinking about this again. I'm not typically a fan of racing or televised sports in general but made me realize FM actually does bring a lot to the table. They don't have big sponsors and car giveaways but they did a really cool thing with that old Ford Ranger. Not anything at all like giving away a Porsche for a Hole in One at a golf tournament lol.
What reminded me of this thread was they built a lot of fun into that trail. More fun for the riders and the viewers. This product was designed around fun and I have a hard time imagining electronic booby traps were ever a consideration during the design process. That idea came much later only to protect investors.
I'm leaning towards, if Kyle had the funds to take this off the ground without the politics of money, it could be something really next level. If he were allowed to be involved with the rest of the community, who knows, he might even be on the podium.
I guess what I'm really trying to say is that I like their content lol.

@blkdout said in FM might be starting a new Podcast. Ep 1 featuring Kyle and Jack.:
I like their content
I have to agree. And this was the best production of all, with better microphones, very little cameras on the commentators, and pretty good live drone coverage.

@blkdout yeah, i missed the women's race but tuned in on sunday and it was a lot of fun to watch. i'm not steady on uneven terrain at all, but it was so interesting (and fun) just to see people who are that good navigate that stuff, and also be able to tell when they are pushing their own comfort levels too.
the other thing that i somehow missed is that it was at Sky Tavern -- literally a 20-30 minute drive from my house, and i had no idea. i'm just too busy with other stuff these days, sigh. it would've been fun to go spend the day up there and watch it live. oh well.

That's a lil weird. How many local resort events occur during the summer? If i were the resort id probably want to batch them all together if i could. might provide some savings on throwing events. Another thing to consider is incentive. Why should i go to Tahoe for a weekend? Seems expensive. If i travel on a plane for pleasure, its for like a week!
Fly on friday, race on saturday, fly on sunday? no thx! If day one was mountain bikes, day two was skydiving, day three was onewheels... now that would be a reason to go somewhere. A veritable Float Fest... u solicit the contributions of local venues as advertisers. Have a local vendor section. If u don't have the infrastructure yourself, then u share it!
another thing is offering stuff for the ppl that travel with u. a spa day for the wife while i abuse myself with friends seems pretty fair. carnival day for kids.
im gonna start charging...

Pretty exciting! As fast as the men go,
is still awesome. -

My only complaint was not enough cameras. I feel like we missed the whole first section with the drone over the trees and some other parts could have had more cameras on the ground. Even with that said, you're right, it was the best production so far. I'm already excited for next year lol.

I almost missed both races lol. Admittedly, I'm not great at keeping up with this stuff. Only by chance I caught the last women's race and it got my attention enough to plan on Sunday's race. Really fun to watch.

FM kept their word :) Episode 2 of the podcast is out.
This month joining Kyle and Jack is RFTR 2022 Champions Racheal Cecil and Kyle Hanson.

@lia is it really a "podcast" if it's on youtube? not sure what else they could call it, but to me it's like calling a TV show a podcast when the term refers to audio content. anyway, looking forward to watching this.
-
@franko TBH I'm glad it's on YT. Shows up in my feed where I get all my other content. I'd hate to return to the days of essentially channel surfing to find stuff but with apps and websites instead.
Fortunately the video part of the podcast isn't important so you can just listen in another tab.
-
I'm not big into podcasts but if it's also on YT, I would still consider it to be. Video is just an avenue for a wider audience. I started listening to the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia podcast and they call their listeners, "Listeners" and the people who watch "Creeps" because creeps like to watch lol. If you know the show, you know.
Anyway, TFL just released their first podcast and it wasn't bad. I'm mostly interested in new products but the rest of the content was also good. One point of interest was they mentioned plans for TEN new tires! I assume 3 for each size (Pint, XR and GT) and a bonus tire for another thing they mentioned. If anyone's interested:

Another podcast, this time featuring Jimmy Chang as teased when they initially started the podcast.
Haven't finished it yet myself but so far it seems pretty decent. Over an hour long so should be good for a long drive if you have one planned. -
@lia huh. i thought Jimmy Chang traded in his OneWheel for an EUC, but i haven't kept up with him lately.
-
@franko There's so much OW content I barely keep up anymore tbh so I'm in the same boat. Jimmy and his family still ride Onewheels but he's mostly EUC at the moment.
During this one Jimmy suggests to the FM boys to maybe consider making an EUC while asking them what they had in mind for future projects.
-
@lia i'm sure they don't tell him, but i'm intrigued to hear what they DO say, haha.
smart of them to be inviting the big OW youtubers as guests. Wonder if they'll have Scott Mendenhall (sp?) on. i liked him early on, but i've kind of moved on. I liked his enthusiasm, but after awhile it started to feel like too much for me.
-
@franko No promises as usual but being an unscripted podcast I can't say I'm surprised, last thing you want to do is be held to an of the cuff comment. I would be interested to see if FM brought anything new to the table with their own EUC.
Jimmy mentioned he believes the QC and app quality far exceeds that of most if not all other PEVs (namely those from China) that he's ever used. Can't speak from experience but curious how that statement stacks up with other PEV enthusiasts.
FM seemed very pleased with the statement as they cut that segment specifically and uploaded it as a short.
I mean compared to some things I've seen it's pretty spot on. For all the issues FM does actually attempt to keep the product in spec and built well. The 4210 controller PCB revision was a welcomed improvement outside of it being serialised. No more busted sensor ports which I've personally had to repair 3 of in 4 years on the older gens. -
@lia i've noticed some trouble with the app lately -- i much prefer the original version i had where i could track my rides myself. now the new app seems to not connect or notice i'm even riding, so i miss parts of my ride, which is kind of a bummer. but it's a minor issue, and part of me wonders if it's because i'm using an OG Pint, and the app is optimized for the newer models, i'm sure.
