XR/Plus motors are being cannibalized
-
@lemur umm so how much is an XR worth now?
-
I tried to get my hands on one before the GT came out, afraid of this. The nickle plating on one of my magnets is cracking and coming off. It isn't causing a problem yet, but who knows when it will, and what damage it might do if the plating breaks loose in there.
I was posting to the Reddit marketplace for months before Bob Nicholson (Bob's Stoke Shop) sent me a price. After I accepted, he ghosted me. I don't want to cannibalize my Plus, as I am teaching my daughter how to ride it. My best bet would probably bet to prowler my Plus for my daughter, then swap the Plus hub to the XR.
The only plus side I see to this is people will be able to get replacement stators cheaper now, when their hall sensors go.
-
@lemur It's a sad sight, that being said... them stators must be cheaper than usual now though right?
I'd pick up a new one for my board. I've never opened it but I know it's going to be disgusting in there. -
@lia You have never done a bearing swap? Do you have bearing covers?
I have to do one every 2K miles at least. Lately, on TFL Grizzlies, I have been getting barely more than 1K miles. Although, as I write this, maybe, I have lower tolerances b/c of the cracked nickle plating on the one magnet.
-
@biell Not on the XR and no covers on the bearings. Nearly 11000km on them and they feel and sound fine which shouldn’t be the case with what I ride through sometimes.
They’ve been submerged frequently for a good duration hence why I feel that stator is going to be more brown and orange than shiney ☠️
WhenIf I open it up I’ll be shocked if it’s still good in there.Wild that you have to swap them often. Maybe I got super lucky with some immortal bearings or I’m incapable of feeling how bad mine have gotten.
-
@lia Wow! Very impressive. I think my longest bearings ever were a pair of Burris hybrid ceramic that lasted 2.5K miles / 4km

@biell Maybe check your stator axle end play, could be too tight and putting pressure on your bearings .
Use a hammer and a piece of wood and hit the axle adapter to move the axle to one side and measure, the hit the axle to move it to the other side and measure, the difference is your endplay.
You should have 0.08-0.15mm. The flaking on your magnets is normal if it's minor. The endplay is controlled by a shim or shims underneath the endplate. -
@lemur Thank you, but I am sorry that I don't understand. Can you explain in a little more layman's terms? Are you talking about torsional play (e.g. hitting downward on the left and right of the axle adapter when on it's side)? Or, are you talking about lateral play, hitting on the sides and measuring?
Also, I don't believe I have anything that can measure to an accuracy below 1mm. I use a T-handle allen wrench and tighten the silver screws to where the T-handle starts to twist, but not a lot. I do the same with the outer hub bolts. My experience is that there is no noticeable (by me and my rudimentary tools) play.
-
@biell Hit the axle block on one side and measure the distance to the hub, record that measurement.
Then hit the axle block on the other side and measure the distance to the hub, at the same spot, that's your second measurement.
The difference between the two measurements is your endplay .
There should be some endplay so your bearings are not under constant pressure.
If you don't have a digital caliper, then it's hard to come up with any decent numbers. -
@lemur Oh, you mean through the wheel, so the axle would actually stick out further or less on one side by a fraction of a millimeter. I don't have a digital caliber, but I could hold my finger against the axle and bearing and probably be able to feel if it moved, since you are talking about the 1/10th of a millimeter scale. Well, at least in 9 of my fingers I should be able to tell.
I thought you were talking about play between the axle and the axle adapter.
I have stock of the Grizzly ceramic b/c I pick a bunch up when they go on sale, but I was thinking about trying out DHM or going to another brand when I have to change them next. When I change them, the pack grease appears to be almost completely gone. I have also wondered if the Grizzly's are more affected by the extremely high quantities of iron in soil near me. It definitely tries to work its way through the bearings and towards my motor.
