Onewheel Neighbors
-
Well, I guess I should barge into the conversation then.
In my college (Tarleton State), there's a lot of electric skateboards and electric scooters, though I'm one out of two people on campus with a Onewheel. I met the other guy last semester on his frost-white pint. I haven't seen him since so he probably transferred, sold the Onewheel or graduated early.
There was another who actually got me hooked onto the Onewheel, and his name was Daniel. He's a pretty cool guy that got a Pint at the beginning of the school year. It was light blue with a pink fender that had that truck bed liner on it. Stock everything, and when I got it, he let everyone try it out. I started to ride it quite a bit, and got to the point where I had more control over it than he did in terms of riding capabilities, though I got worried that I was annoying him with it. Got my XR over Thanksgiving break last semester and I have not regretted it since!
However, back at home in Dallas, there is a large Onewheel community. There's a group of people that ride quite a bit and I'm in their facebook group. I don't have a lot of pictures but there's a bunch of people who ride some modified boards. At least one guy has a VESC and goes some neat tricks, and there's another who's got a GTR with custom everything.
I'm going back home next weekend because my grandma, my mom and I are having out birthdays around that time! (Grandma is on the 18th, Moms on the 19th and I'm on the 20th!)
I'll try and go on a group ride over the weekend and get some pictures with them.
On another note, off topic but has anyone had their upgraded pint handle snap? Mine did.

@onedangt I love how you get to see them out and about a few times, must be nice to get to chill with them from time to time.
When I get to move to the US you bet me and @cheppy44 are making a roadtrip to come see you all in your respective states at some point. Always wanted to swing by TFL (among other places) and see what's up without falling on my bum trying to do anything other than going forwards lol.
-
@lia That's funny, cuz I told them I love their videos riding all of the paths I take, but that I can't even ride backwards, much less do any tricks like they do. :D
-
@lia Same! I'd love to stop by and say hi to TFL, however shipping the Onewheel XR battery (stock) is a hasstle. Got off the phone with UPS literaly five minutes ago and they told me I need to go talk to someone who's got "hazmat certification" and ship it through them, FYI
(My mom wants to take me to LA for spring break and I want to bring my Onewheel with me, but I know I can't bring the batttery on the plane. I'd rent one but I'd probably thrash the hell out of it with how I ride my onewheel and get a fine from the renters.) {apologies for de-railing topic}
-
@loaffette there is a site called friend with a that people rent boards out on. Being in LA im sure there are tons of people who ride there. looks like renting them are around $50-$70 a day depending on model.

@cheppy44 I would but I ride like an absolute maniac and I'd bring the board back with about 20 new scratches and a missing bolt or two
I COULD try and talk to some of the people on that site and see what their expectations are

Surprise! Out and about Ruth Anne saw yesterday, in the middle of the early Spring day, an active Onewheel up in our nearby town of 5,900 people. That's number 5 that I know of in our rural county of about 100,000 people. I am pretty sure I was the first here with a Onewheel -- and almost certainly I am the most active rider here in this county.
-
@s-leon Did Ruth Anne manage to talk to them or did they zoom by too quick to get a word in?
That's pretty cool to be one of if not THE first Oneweeler in the area. For sure you're the most active~
-
-
@onedangt -- Not quite -- although a notable rider nonetheless.
@Lia -- I thought about going up to town and riding around fishing for the rider Ruth Anne saw... but then I kind of like "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Onewheel Rider." So, no contact yet. Maybe when and if they become a fixture around town.
-
@s-leon Finally got another break in the non-stop rain here in Sacramento and I run into Jeff McCosker out by himself. He asked what I was up to and I told him I was looking for dry places to ride. Two thirds of my normal daily ride are inaccessible due to water on the bike trails!
-
@onedangt wow -- well, if you're gonna randomly run into a Onewheel neighbor, it might as well be a famous one, lol.

Onewheeling the rural road today a black SUV overtook me very slowly, and hesitantly rolled down the window to talk with me. Visiting here in Northeast Ohio from North Carolina, the guy noticed my EGO battery atop of the Onewheel and wanted to know how I hooked it up. Turns out he has EGO tools and a Onewheel Plus. So, we talked by the side of the road as motorcycles and pickup trucks stopped to ask if we were okay. The guy showed me his wife's PintX in the way back of his car. It was a neighborly surprise interaction.

On my Onewheel I saw and talked with Matthew -- the in-his-twenties, tall, friendly, athletic, superbly balanced-and-in-control-of-his-Onewheel, wears-no-helmet-or-any-gear -- Onewheeling with his dog, Graham, on the Greenway today. I told him, "I was sure glad I was wearing a helmet today."
And then related an innocent fall I had just had on wet grass and slimy dead sticks around a fallen tree on the trail. Trying to cross angled branch-sized sticks extremely slowly, the Onewheel tipped one way, then the other, and as I jumped off my foot slipped and I went down backwards, smacking my helmet on pavement.
Not even a scuff on the helmet, but without I would be throbbing and dazed. Instead I am smiling and happy with the 36 mile ride! Only about 1492 miles to go to catch the number 1 (from Spain) on the V1 distance Leaderboard. At this rate maybe not much more than a month or two.

Yesterday I met another Onewheel neighbor: Brody, Onewheeling a Pint on the trail where my sister and I walk a few times a week. Very nice young man, he is, a local sophomore, Onewheeling the Lakeshore Reservation, scouting the rough and windy Lake Erie that day for surfing conditions. He said he's been Onewheeling for four years now, and hopes to take it with him to Princeton in two. He was quite taken by surprise when I showed him that I hold places on the Onewheel Leaderboards.

I drove over an hour to meet up with fellow OW, more were meant to come but the weather forecast was a gamble. All being well I have another ride with a friend to look forward to tomorrow, and a group ride on Sunday. Life is good right now. :)
-
Well I met up with said friend, who is actually the one who got me into onewheeling a few months ago. Great time as always.
-
@theadman You should tell her to tie her shoe laces up in case she falls down that hill ;)
-
@lia it's just perfect that's in the photo, "reckon I can drop this hill? Oh wait check your laces, it's not safe" 🤣
-
The group ride was as awesome as I hoped, I'm really looking forward to the next.
Never a dull moment with this one!
