Was thinking the other day what I should bring on upcoming rides to assist in repairs if something goes wrong. Been lucky so far to not get caught out miles into a field before but I'd like to prepare for it just in case.

Pump and a few hex keys would probably be useful but it'd need to be portable, something you could stow away in a small bag or even strapped to a fender. Puncture kit would be good too but deciding which one to get can be the difference between getting home being carried by the board or you carrying it.

Anyone got a set of small yet extremely useful tools for mobile repair in a pinch? What sort of breakdowns are you expecting to try fix out in the wild?

@lia I ride with a drop bag on my trailing hip, because I don't want anything in front or behind me that might hit a tree in a tight spot. With the number of times I have brushed my back on a tree, I'm confident I would be knocked off my board with a backpack on. I don't have a tire puncture kit, but that probably would be a good idea; I might have to add one.

I have this one from Hebetag, but there are lots of options available at reasonable prices:

        • https://waistbagshop.com/product/canvas-nylon-men-waist-pack/

In it, I carry the following:

        • plastic bag with replacement screws of various sizes (if you buy from a hardware retailer like McMaster-Carr, you can get boxes of 100 screws for $7US and then hand them out like candy to whomever needs one)
        • Allen wrenches for the standard 10-32 screws, the 5/16-18 hub bolts, and M4-10 motor plate bolts
        • small phillips head
        • two Pint Torx bits (I don't have a pint, but in case I am riding with one; I'm expecting these to be useful for my GT)
        • key-chain tire pressure gauge
        • Pro Ride hand pump
        • handkerchief
        • garbage bag (I often find trash on trails)
        • assortment of band aids and second skin, alcohol prep pads
        • lip balm
        • Lemon Lock (not very safe, but small, light, and better than nothing in a pinch)
        • Platypus soft water bottle

The bag also has room to just barely fit a charger, though I have only ever done so once. It was the Chi XR fast charger that I brought with me.

@biell That's a good list of kit, sounds like it would get you through a number of issues that could arise.

Box of screws and appropriate tooling is very useful. Early on I didn't tighten down my fender bolts well enough and went offroading. 2 came out and caused the fender to vibrate like mad. I couldn't remove the last 2 or replace the missing ones which led to a shameful ride back to repair, recharge and try again.

Puncture wise some bacon strips and maybe those internal mushroom patches would be good. I don't fancy taking the entire tire off out in the wild but I'd like to be able to repair a brutal puncture if needed. Whisper is unbelievably easy to do by hand so just a pump, rag, hex keys and patches would be needed for that.

@biell i keep a tiny bike pump, a hex key for the fender, a small flat pack roll of gorilla tape enough to wrap the tire circumference a few times, a wooden dugout cuz i like to party, a lighter, a sports camera, some paracord for a leash if necessary, chapstick, some cash for an uber or taxi, a usb battery, a bt radio speaker, n a pair of meat claws in case i need to pull some pork.

            XR's got what plants crave!
