    • Vesc specific batteries

Just to share here, as far as it's not known already:

Chi re-did the CBSO battery for use with VESC. It includes a bms and comes as 20s2p 18650 config. Think using the Samsung 30q. It needs a switch on the vesc (like raiden/lfoc3 etc).
The battery fits in the stock casing.

Igor (Onewheelriders workshop) also did a collab with badgerwheel and is about to release a VESC battery:
A 19s2p 21700 pack designed for use with the Ennoid Xlite bms (because of how the balance connectors are configured). It comes with a injection molded casing with very good water resistance.

    • RE: GTXR conversion- version 2

@ed_co Agreed! Every fart the aftermarkets create costs gold nowadays. Greed is key, getting ridiculous. I sometimes feel like selling my shit when XR's die and get a Ninebot z10. It's not as fun but i notice my pride is starting to get in the way.

I do understand making the rotor from a chunk af alu is expensive so the pricing is somewhat understandable. People will buy it, it's design+need. But fuck no i will NEVER buy this.

    • RE: Vesc specific batteries

      @notsure Sorry;)

      So my ride:
34km paved and pretty hard trails. Avg 35kph cruise on pave.
Speeds: Pushback set @80% (of available capacity). The lower the battery gets, the earlier pushback comes. At the top-end of the pack i hit 45kph, before pushback. I eased down and continued most of paved part between 35 and 40kph. Started hitting pushback after using over 65% of the battery. At nearly empty pack still confidently hitting 34kph, sometimes pushback kicked in on accellerating carves. Could have upped the limit to 85% but i did not feel like getting off the board.

Torque. Crazy. Never felt like even close to nosedive. Imagine going up a dirt hill with XR where it will slow down, bury the nose and shutdown?
On this thing i can ride up, stop in the middle, push down the nose and continue.
Nudging a curb at low speeds is like going up a "bonk" bump. Just climbs up.

Ride feel The butteryness of Mission with Delirium when i need it. It's so damn smooth. I can imagine beginner riders will find it tricky cause it feels even less artificial than Mission. Just so smooth.

I just need my damn varials cause im not used to riding straight rails anymore.

So 420wh battery lasted me 34km into capt morgan. Might get over 40 if not pushed that hard.

    • RE: XR Error 16 (repaired)

I would like to add to this. There are several cases where error 16 showed up that have nothing to do with chip or wiring. I ve suffered from a pretty rare case myself on a 4209/4132 board where a CBXR  was installed. Clearly no-one including Chi believed that it wasn't my install error and advised i replace the harness. Off course i tested the harness to ensure it had no flaws. Im quite neurotic and made absolutely sure all components were working before and install was done as clean as it gets.

      What happened:
After install the board worked fine for a couple of charges. But suddenly i was faced with a buzzing phone mid-ride, the tail sunk into the asphalt (like empty-battery pushback) and the board started a wild accelleration with tail scraping the floor. Bailout was only way to stop which happened a couple of times in full traffic...pretty scary if you dont expect it.

      Conditions:
Some conditions had to be met for this to happen.

      • App needs to be at 1%. So the board calculated that full stock battery capacity had to be used up.
      • Voltage needed to drop below 53v. Typically the voltage after the error would be between 53.4 and 52,8v.
      • Below pushback speed. Im afraid that, if this error happened above pushback speed, the board likely would nosedive without warning. I cannot be sure but lucky i did not have to find out in the field.
      • A reboot of the board AFTER the error showed up guaranteed i was able to ride the board till empty.  No more error16.

After some thinking and troubleshooting to discard other things causing problems it occured to me that the board simply had no other option to display this error, thus 16 showed up. What probably was happening is a critical error where the board cannot resolve unless rebooted. There are possible cases where it occurs and even a reboot does not solve it, bricking the board (4210/4150 boards that were initially lucky to have a functioning cbxr at start).
Also the possibility that some boards do not carry the app-indicated firmware in all components: a 4132 controller with non-4132 bms.

What can be concluded is, that app indication is not always what's installed. Also the coding is said to be poorly done.  I know nothing about coding but my thoughts were supported by people working/flashing/repairing this stuff.

My problem was solved: i sent in my bms to have it flashed to a compatible custom firmware. This is possible up to/incl 4209/4132 boards.

    • RE: Onewheel suspension build

@lemur So far im able to ride 50km in one go (cbxr) without any issues so fatigue is no problem yet. Weirdly enough riding WTF rails in mission (bit nose-down) even increased the comfort level more. But it must be a sweet sensation having an enhanced floaty feeling. I would certainly miss the connection with board and terrain i think. Still will try a suspension board as soon as i get the chance!

@biell Heat shortens the de-molding process. Im thinking it could help after de-mold as well cause they're not fully cured yet. I could be totally wrong, know jackshit of this material really🤣

The softer one bonks fine in the limited room i have in the yard. Not impressive but neither am i...just bonk stuff to get over it on trails usually.

    • RE: What MOD are you most stoked about?

@notsure You can't! Some custom setting is fairly similar to Mission but there is more surging. Also changing the nose-angle helps to ride level until PB but at low speeds, when crawling through some technical trail, the nose will only rise after accellerating so nose clearance remains a problem. A tiltkit is the only way to keep Mission, ride switch, clear terrain etc but it's a pretty intensive mod.

    • RE: DIY W Rails

@biell I understand. It sucks to make compromises sometimes. I got fed up with that hence mostly ride vesc now. Except when wet/rain, then i grab the over-badgered XR. But also working on getting the vesc winterproof which possibly will make FM totally obsolete.

Just make sure you keep an eye on that capacitor closest to the handle. Also make some testrides now and monitor/screenshot the controller temperatures.
After the mod make the same rides again under similar circumstances and compare the temperatures to see if there's significant (5+ degC) difference. Thicker thermal pads reduce transfer dramatically. I wish you all the luck and hope this will make your board ride amazing again!

    • RE: DIY W Rails

@biell Sorry have not been here often lately, life got demanding;)
Tbh nose-low is a pretty good thing on wtf's. I cannot imagine using a tiltkit on them since i ride pushback+ all the time and having my board back on straight rails temporarily last week literally killed my legs on my commute fighting PB. After work i had to swap around rails from 3 boards to get WTF's back on it.
Downside of riding PB is there is no 2nd PB to prevent you from eating it. This is a big issue cause i ride vesc mostly (27-30mph) and when going back to Wtf XR sometimes im constantly on the edge of nosediving.

Edit: on a recent reddit post someone had an img of a 4212XR. Looks like the capacitors are different compared to pre 4209? Installing a tiltkit could be better on those..

@notsure Regular vesc, load newest 5.3 firmware, upload an XML, run motor wizard, adjust couple parameters, go.

I still don't have lights, don't know if the rEscue will fit.

    • RE: VESC configuration, what is your ideal VESC budget/configuration with BOM?

@ed_co For starters my can-IC died. Why? This should not be easy to mess up. Flux on discord messed up 4 of them until he found out it was a faulty BT module.

Soon we will start a guinea-pig offensive on Field weakening. That's right; pad up, go out and take it like a champ for the team. So not sure what this will do to the focer.

Note for the ones not aware: Field weakening uses the back-EMF of the motor to overclock the rpm of the hub. Today i tested it without load @ 85% max dutycycle.
Without it the board reaches 48kph (i have done 46.8 while riding and hit pushback there at 85% dutycycle).
Using field weakening the board reaches 64kph at same dutycycle!!

Also im not a big fan of the jst-ph connectors. The plugs become lame after some unplug/replugs and they hang upside-down so...

Soon i will try rEscue. Provided i can make it fit, also not known if this will mess with the focer.

BMS: It is important this thing can at least show us cell balance status and pack temperature. But who will make a usable one?

Battery: will the vesc really protect pack as setup? How long will it last until cells start to degrade?

Hub: How long will the hypercore be able to take the vesc-style control?

All together as a system any of these components can degrade it instantly. There is zero fail-safe and coasting is no option so...time will tell.

The boxes..they will improve as people test different materials. Sometime soon we might find a usable filament. Im not into this so will consume once it's out there.

    • RE: VESC configuration, what is your ideal VESC budget/configuration with BOM?

@lemur The newest fw is awesome. Still got a test file with the yaw based turntilt but as rain continues can't test it. I honestly do like a loose board that makes the rider work a bit too;) so not sure if i will use that option. Opening my board is more hardware related atm, getting the components to work reliable and figure ways to make the unit as robust as possible.
I said it before: we still need to find out how long/well a (properly) assembled and configured Vesc board will hold. Basically we have no MTBF yet..

    • RE: VESC configuration, what is your ideal VESC budget/configuration with BOM?

      @notsure
To start with i have been testing Surf's unreleased firmwares for over a year now. So lots of times it would be too much to handle for the board integrity or components as i pushed it to limits and had interesting findings to tweak. Atm the newest fw works awesome but now it's more about hardware configuration, limitations and fitment.
Now the lfoc3 canbus ic died. Not certain the ennoid bms killed it or not. If so, we're looking at trouble when the TORque packs ship out cause they all will work with the ennoid.
I might receive an 84v capable rEscue soon, so then it's looking at how to fit this in the box and make it work over canbus along with the bms....continuous wip.

@notsure lol even when pnp vesc is a fact it will be far from trouble free. Sooo much work to be done. I simply can't waterproof my board cause i gotta open it up all the time for all kinds of reasons. Failing components being just a part of it.
