Onewheel Wiki?
-
With reddit gone for the foreseeable future and most of the community split between FB and Discord, neither of which having the sort of power and structure of a dedicated forum I figured it might be worth stepping up and trying to fill the void.
I was wondering if it might be worth creating some sort of encyclopaedic pages here as a single point for information or where to get it. I have considered this for a while but in light of recent events it seems like something needs to be done.
There is already an actual Onewheel Wiki page which is still quite useful but it doesn't look like it's been updated since 2019 and I cannot for the life of me find who or how to update some of it.
In some free time I was considering adding some pages here to recreate the resource and use the forum's open discussion to enable it to be expanded at any moderators discretion. I could even setup Wiki specific moderators if need be and they only have power over that sub-category.
These will probably be created in the form of locked topics that are visible to everyone but can only be modified by moderators. Comments would be disabled to prevent cluttering the page and instead a separate "suggestions" topic below in the category would be available for anyone to suggest any alterations.
So assuming this is a good idea below are some things I was considering keeping in mind when starting it.
- Pages should have a consistent theme, layout and overall structure so that readers don't get confused.
- Content where possible should cite references to any source material used not only for verifying information but also to credit those that originally made whatever is being referenced. I will likely create a little "best practices" reference so it's easy to follow and doesn't become tedious to cross check things.
- Pages will be split between the board models. Each will get their own topic that will have a master post at the top with links to the below sub-posts (comments) which will feature information like General Information, Specs, Revisions by HW model, Common issues and errors, Etc. I can expand on this all later with some drawn mockups to visualise this if any of that was confusing.
- Where possible resources like images should be uploaded to the pages rather than linked and pulled from external sources as to limit the probability that those will be taken down or lost creating a broken resource.
Thoughts on this are appreciated or if anyone things its even a good idea.
There might even be better resources already out there that I am unaware of in which case I'd rather not complicate matters and step on toes by creating yet another thing. -
@lia restructuring information takes energy. wiki prob not updated since 2019 for a reason. if I were a mod, i would want a custom mod tool to tag relevant posts and a tool to help aggregate them as it grows.

@lia -- Sounds ambitious and good for all!!!

@lia wow, my first thought was that this sounds like a LOT of work, but i agree that it would be nice to have an ever-growing database of info and facts about each model -- and that's where my second thought came i, because really there aren't that many models, and the differences between the models are pretty distinct on the surface...
i guess where i land is on the "this sounds great!" side of things, but i wonder if you really have the time and energy to take it on. don't overdo it!

Thanks all ^-^
It will be a ton of effort, but it can be a gradual thing.
I don't expect it to be perfect or even super packed with knowledge to begin with but eventually I'd hope to build a nice well documented set of pages that could theoretically be a single one stop place to actually find information.
Besides work has been kinda slow so I can chew on that between taking calls and waiting for diagnostic tests to complete lol.

this would be pretty interesting to see!
I may contribute with adding small details or the minute ones that people often forget about

It's a hidden sub-category to anyone but mods at the moment but I will work on getting some basic format laid out and share my intentions before getting my pawsies dirty and begin info gathering.
There is now a generic "Onewheel Forum" account I will offload certain site topics to like these. Kinda felt right rather than having myself be the face of the forum. Feels a bit more professional at least for stuff like this.
So far I've put it under "Repair" but I will probably move it elsewhere. Maybe under "General Discussion" or give it it's own one. If so I'll have to pick a colour for the category that I haven't already used. Already used Black, White and grey plus the major subdivisions of the rainbow.

I've done a bit more work on Wiki infrastructure and the XR page that I'm using to base the other pages on.
There is now a Wiki Editors group that currently has access to view and edit the pages. Myself and @cheppy44 are in there for testing purposes but I will likely expand on this soon and start accepting submissions to be an editor.
I will be strict on admissions though, ideally it'll be those in the community with an extensive knowledge of at least a single board so that the information can be vetted appropriately. There will be an editor only sub-category where you can all discuss changes if desired. Private and invisible to everyone but global mods and admins ofc.
(off topic but while making the group I fixed the thumbnails for the groups so they're not blurry anymore. They were really bad before lol)
