Board failure

While riding my XR+ this past Saturday, the board spontaneously turned off while traveling 7-10 mph. Fortunately, the pavement was smooth, saving me a trip to the hospital. I was at 47% at the time of the incident, riding on a level road. The board turns on, though it turns off as soon as I step on. I also noticed that the motor bumps when I manually turn the wheel in the off position. The board has roughly half the drag when off compared to being pushed when powered on.
I contacted future motion, who then sent me a mailing label to ship back for diagnostics and potential charges to repair.
3 Questions:- Has anyone experienced a board failure (not rider error) contributing to a nosedive?
- Would fangs have saved me in this situation?
- I purchased my board on October 15th, 2021, and am now four months out of warranty. Does Future Motion typically stand behind its product in situations like this?

@s1000pre -- Hi, and welcome to the OWForum. A pavement surprise! Not pleasant. While your description of spontaneous shut-down while Onewheeling has not happened to me, one thing to check from what I read is the connectors under the connector cover -- shut down can happen if one bumps loose.

@s1000pre I've had issues where my board wouldn't activate when I stepped on it, and it was just simply that the front footpad sensor got unplugged

I tore my rotator cuff full thickness 35mm last February riding the XR on a mountain bike trail. Totally my fault, I chose to push through when I should have slowed down, the rut won. My wife and I have XR’s, the kids both ride Pints. Getting tossed due to rider error is one thing, going down due to mechanical failure is another (no time to react). With an accumulated 2800 miles, this was the first mechanical failure. This board only has 420 miles, my wife’s board. I just sent it off today to be repaired. Let’s see how Future Motion handles it.

@s1000pre ouch! sry to hear that. yeah i think it comes down to application tbh.
i ride tepid suburban terrain without much nudging or tricks. very docile by comparison.
i have had a few nose dips but the fang bumper worked well enough.
i too would prefer if there was more redundancy but i think thats just the natural progression for the technology.
split pack design in either footpad. one side fails, the other takes over.

@s1000pre The problem may be a shorted out mosfet in the controller, effectively shorting one of the 3 phase windings causing a drag even when the board is off. It's not a easy repair and worst yet, no XR mosfets in stock anywhere. That's my best guess. Fangs may not have done much in your case as the ND happened quick, giving you no chance of running it out.
