XR Wheels (Does changing out an XR tire affect how it rides?)
-
Title says it all, but I've got an extra question to add on, or at least a small note. I've been riding my friends OW since he doesn't use it much, and I've gotten really accustom to the nimbleness and general movement of the Pint. I was curious as to if you could take an XR and slap a different tire on it, and get the same movement/behavior as a Pint.
I love the pint for it's size and how well it handles, but I absolutely despise the battery life. I'm never happy with how I'll finally be getting into going faster or at least getting into the groove, then the LED bar on it turns yellow and I have to coast around my dorm building until the LED goes red.
I like the look of the XR, and I've heard the range and speed is better. I would go for a Pint X, but uhhhh... I'd like to be able to shove a new battery into it later on lol. And the GT looks cool, but I'd have to
selldonate a kidney for that one, the same thing as above. (Also, I've heard about poor engineering of the HUB motor, mount and cooling. Personally, if they don't think about that kind of stuff and release with a ghosting issue, I'm worried about what other kind of issues they haven't accounted for or will come later.) -
@loaffette My first board was a +, then I upgraded to an XR. On both boards, I installed treaded tires because of how square the Vega OEM tire was. On the + I was riding a Burris, then on my XR (which @S-Leon now owns) I rode a Hoosier for 5000 miles, then a Hoosier T2 Whisper for a couple more thousand miles. All of the treaded tires were more nimble than the Vega.
Trying to get to the point here, but hang on, LOL. I now ride a GT at home (really love it), but the treaded OEM tire was like riding a bowling ball, so I now have a TFL Enduro on it and it's awesome. I also have a Pint X at my vacation home and, after the over-nimbleness of the GT OEM treaded tire, I immediately installed a Hoosier Treaded tire, never even rode the OEM tire. The Pint X is still the most nimble board I've ridden and is not my favorite ride, but to each their own, as I realize a lot of people like that. I also don't really like the smaller footpads (even tho my shoe size is 8.5) and the HARD pushback at 16 mph, as I would ride my XR at around 17 and my GT now between 19 and 20 mph.
If you can find an XR and put a rounder tire on it, that may work for you, but I don't think you'll be able to get it too close to the Pint feel. If you don't think you'll want to go faster than 16 mph, I would recommend the Pint X. It's a solid board and I get almost 18 miles of range (I'm 185 lbs). Me, I really like the larger footpads and a bit more speed, but I still have a lot of fun on the Pint X when I'm on vacation.
All that said, resale is really good on all of the boards, so if you change your mind after purchasing, you could always switch!

@loaffette -- A Hoosier 5.5 treaded is ballsy and tippy -- which I enjoy. The T2 and Burris are comfortable. Stock Vegas are square -- but I have ridden two to threads. Part of the nimbleness may be firmware, because my V1 in Extreme is much more responsive to ride than my Plus or the OneDanXR in Mission or Delirium. VESC looks like it can be tuned to preferred responsiveness.
