Riding with a HeadLamp is a Game Changer!
-
Flashlights and Work Lights are a common tool for me at work and home. I don't collect them per se but safe to say, I have many lol. Some co-workers and friends have headlamps but I never had the desire to buy one until I started Onewheeling.
Tonight is my first time trying one out on the trails and all I can say is, YES! The days of holding a flashlight are gone and I'm riding at night handsfree again. I was a skeptic but it works perfect for this application.
How do you guys light your way at night?
-
@blkdout Really good idea. My board mounted headlight is okay but has it's limits being low down.
Does that have some sort of focus on it as I see some markings on the lens suggesting it rotates? -
@lia Yeah, it does focus and has 3 brightness settings. Coast makes some great adjustable projection flashlights so I jumped on this one. It goes even wider and brighter than the light I normally carry. Win win, can't wait to use it again tonight.
I had the same thoughts about a board mounted light. I assumed when going uphill it would cancel out, especially on trails. If there was some auto-level mechanism like we have in cars though, I'd be "on board" lol.

For the coming darkness, this week I ordered an expensive Outbound Lighting "Detour" self-contained bike light that I am planning to use with my Onewheels as a hand-held. Designed like an automobile headlamp, it has two simultaneous beams -- one for throw, and the other for spread. Oh! It got delivered while writing this; I put it on the charger and early mornings this week I will see how I like it. Outbound Lighting also sells a helmet lamp called the "Hangover."

@s-leon That looks like a nice light! Let us know how it works out. Are you planning to hold it like a flashlight?
-
I'm having too much fun lol:

@blkdout -- Yes, I hold the Outbound Detour kind of like a flashlight, except I hold it comfortably by the ring of the handlebar mount. This morning I was out on the Greenway in the cloud-covered, extra pitch dark before daybreak. Of course, I have been meaning to be up that early and out for two weeks now, and finally did it. The Outbound Detour shines very much like a car's headlight, casting well ahead from just ahead of the board's nose all the way out where I need it at 20 mph, as well as off to the sides. On the trail in the woods I saw three single whitetail deer, and interesting small flocks of birds low in the Greenway corridor, their wings flashing in the light.
