@Lia Wow! 🤯🤯🤯 I haven't been here a while, but spotting this short on YT has blown my brain. Had to log in for the full story.
Congratulations on the success, full respect to you.

RE: Whoa - Voluntary Recall
Hi everyone, Sorry I haven't been on the forum for a while. Life has been getting in the way until this update email arrived.
Great to read everyone's thinking. I'm going to sit on the fence for a while to see how the update might impact my 4208 XR. My ride still pretty std. The thing that would bother me most is if the pushback is changed so its as violent as the pint. After 15,000km I'm tuned into the subtle pushback of an XR.

RE: Watching Action on the Leaderboards
Are the Northern Hemisphere riders back out riding yet? Or still too bleak?
I'm still climbing on the XR mileage rank, where previous years it would slow down or even go backwards around this time of year as Northerners get out there again. Maybe a big percentage has moved to the GT and parked their XR's? 🙄

Bit of a Floyd nut here 😊
I crashed belting along to 'great gig in the sky' ...no injuries, Claire saved me....😂

@sirgu had two dogs go nuts at me just today, both poodles! I rest my case. 🐩🐩

RE: Badger Bumper trouble
@loaffette if you have a set of thread taps, you can re-tap the thread on the rails to the next size up. Does require tracking a larger screw but can get you out of trouble till the new rails show up. Or another option if you know a shop, to weld up the original hole, re-drill and tap it back to original.

Stinkyface feature in Cleantechnica!
A good friend and fellow OW'er featured with me in an online article.
Let me know what you think? Have we missed the point?
Somehow without mentioning, a photo from @S-Leon made it into the story? I shared the photo but also a few words about our legendary friend. You should comment on the article @S-Leon to claim your ownership of that beast of a board.

RE: In The Wild, Photo Share (If Possible To Capture).... Keep Your OneWheel In The Shot If You Can.
Not the first of these I have shared, but this python caught my eye on someone's drive as I rode home last night. Had a real stumpy tail, probably and old injury.

RE: Torque of onewheel motors
@notsure said in Torque of onewheel motors:
@stinkyface i was referring to the mechanical force applied by the apparatus, and the power required to do so.
the premise is that there is a max amount of force a person can apply to an object in a controllable manner. The human body exerts a certain force when jumping vertically.
I think we'll find that the XR is only capable of about 0.1 - 0.2g acceleration in std form. The magic formula to get from torque to acceleration is Force = mass x acceleration and the torque / wheel radius = Force. The mass bit is why lighter people can generally accelerate faster with the same driving force. Pretty sure we black out at 9g (according to Top Gun!). F1 cars accelerate at 2g, but brake and corner up to 6g.
If a board could exert anywhere near even 1g, your front leg would give way. Would be a wild ride! 😂

RE: Torque of onewheel motors
@onedangt said in Torque of onewheel motors:
@notsure And yet another question, what amount of torque/power would it take so the board could totally prevent nosedives?
Good question and not too hard to approximate an answer. Leaning fwd a loooong way, your centre of gravity could be as much as 1m in front of the axle, so the motor would need to produce about 1,000N.m of torque to prevent you leaning further forward. Those are pretty big numbers and I suspect the tyre would just lose traction.
People quoting power as the be all of nose dives is misleading. Torque is what the rider feels as acceleration. Lets say my really rough numbers earlier are true and the little XR can produce 200N.m of torque. I'm putting a 144V 110kW electric motor into a car conversion and it only produces 220N.m of torque, but it does rev to 8,000rpm. The XR motor is a low speed high torque electric motor.

RE: Torque of onewheel motors
@notsure said in Torque of onewheel motors:
@stinkyface here's a question for you: is there a peak power for a onewheel?
Yes, if you are talking about mechanical power (the relationship between torque +speed).
Electrical power is different and it is possible to pull full electrical power from a standing start and hold it at full power as you accelerate. Electrical power = volts x Amps, so no relationship to speed or torque.
The reason the two power types can coexist and still be true is to convert electric power (Watts) into mechanical power (also in Watts) there is an efficiency applied to the electrical power to get the output mechanical power. At low rpm the motor efficiency is crap and it gets better as you approach peak mechanical power where it will be ~95%
Not sure @NotSure 🙄 if that's where you were heading and apologies for the technobabble.

@lia said in Torque of onewheel motors:
Now I feel like some actual science needs doing. We need to make a Onewheel Dyno lol
Timing is good for this, lately I've been working on a similar question for another project. If we can measure the acceleration doing a nose drag (time to cover 10 or 20m) then we can calculate the torque pretty easily. Human Dyno! Anyone with fangs want to give it a run?

RE: Torque of onewheel motors
I'm not sure those numbers are correct. Seems high.
The amount of torque will vary depending on speed. The nice thing about electric motors is they produce max torque at zero rpm and generally the curve is pretty flat until about 2/3rds of the rpm range when it drops away
This prob lines up the the rpm for pushback.Because of the typical torque curve shape, peak mechanical power (750W or 1hp) will occur up highish in the rpm range.
Power = torque x speed
Blah blah.....sorry I'm going all engineer on you.
Based on the board being able to 'lift' or rotate a board with say 100kg on the front footpad at about 25cm from the axle to the centreline of the front foot. That is:
100kg = 980N @ 0.25m then the motor is developing about 250N.m, but probably a bit less than that.
If it was developing any more, nose drags wouldn't be possible unless you are really heavy and have your front foot hanging off the front pad.

RE: 2023 Plans?
@lia said in 2023 Plans?:
@stinkyface Where abouts have you gotten so far?
91 although did briefly sit at 89 while someone must have disconnected their board. 13,100km.

RE: 2023 Plans?
@lia just keep clocking up the k's. Top 50 for mileage would be a bonus, no idea how many km that hurdle is.
I got a small 4k camera for Chrissy, need to print off an adaptor to fit it to a new helmet I haven't bought yet. Lotta projects.

Onewheeling in HOT weather
To balance out the previous topic on current northern hemisphere weather. We are currently sweating buckets down in the southern half of the world and in my city (Brisbane) the last few days have been scorchers with a bonus 80-90% humidity. We're supposed to be sub-tropical... 🥵.
Any ways I screened my board temps after my usual 8km commute home at 5pm and check out the heat in the motor! 2nd shot for the farenheit fans.
Anyone seen hotter temps?

Peatys Tubeless Sealant with Bio-Glitter!
Picked up another thumbtack in my tyre today. I didn't bother with slime when I installed it as I went for a treaded tyre.
Not a biggie but which slime to buy? I have some mushrooms but they are intended for bigger holes and I would have to butcher the tyre to get the mushroom 🍄 in.
Armordilloz isn't common here in Aus ($55 + p&p) and I forgot to order some with my last tyre order from the U.S.
So down to the local shoppie so I can get home today and they offered up some Peaty's Tubeless Sealant, eco friendly with no micro fibres but does include biodegradable glitter platelets!
Honestly it reads like a vegan sugar free chemical experiment that will save the world.
@Lia it's apparently made by a UK mountain biking legend, Steve Peat, who I'm sure must be a friend of yours given how small the U.K. is.
I will report back in the coming months with a further product review. 😁

RE: In The Wild, Photo Share (If Possible To Capture).... Keep Your OneWheel In The Shot If You Can.
@lia yeah, apparently they make great pets. This guy was hanging around expecting food, so I guess other people at that cafe have been feeding them. They normally eat insects or smaller lizards.
Was cool to be so close to one.

Australian Water Dragon checking out my ride at a cafe on the river!
I think he liked it? Male of the species with the red chest.

RE: Onewheel Photoshoot Thread
Snapped this on my first ride to work for the year. I always wonder if the spelling errors are intentional??
Will do better next time and include the board. 🙄
