Thor vesc in a Xr/Plus controller box
-
@highspeeddirt There are two buck converters , one for 3 volts for the front light and the other for 5 volts for the adruino nano for the rear led lights.
The Thor vesc supports front and rear led lights by itself, without buck converters and nano, but there is a lot of confusing wiring diagrams out there.
I will get that sorted out and redo the lights later, but this is a working temporary solution for now. -
@lemur oh of course. This the tiny board fans to cool the conversion. Is there any reason to go beyond a Thor to say an x12 or can the Thor handle pretty much anything the x12 can?
-
@highspeeddirt Up to 20s (84v) the Thor is perfect, it runs cooler than most vescs, also come with a embedded bt , although you have one extra step to connect to it .
The Tronic X12 is good if you want 24s or 30s, but a bit pricey $450 us. -
@lemur that's about what I figured. The 30S version seems appealing for my current build interest. I do a lot of downhill riding. I started out on a long board bombing hills. Speed doesn't scare me and my ankles are in great control of a one wheel, even with a high psi.
I'm looking to build a setup that can handle a lot of braking power. Coming up to a corner at 30mph and not knowing if trust the board to stop or tail slide through the turn is a bit concerning.
I have a 20s2p 250r GT that I am looking to upgrade from. Even with that setup, I can't seem to get it to fully support the amount of control I need for the corners.
I'm looking to build out a custom controller box to fit an extra 20cells and possibly run the x12.
-
@lemur hey I just got a bigger battery and ended up going with a Thor300 esc for my XR. I want to keep most everything else stock and just splice or use an adapter as needed like the stock XR harness and motor. Was just curious if you kept stock motor for this build you did?
-
@kusosan I used the stock motor but I cut off the 9 pin Molex and used bullet connectors.
The stock XR controller box was used with a adapter for a 20mm gland, also a custom wiring harness was made. The picture shows block off plates, but on a Ubox build.
The Thor is mounted on a aluminum plate and bolted to the controller top lid. -
what LEDs are those? on your front controller box?
Also, I'm stupid jealous of your clean wiring. It looks amazing! -
@lemur awesome job on it and thanks for the reply. It's my first time really getting into the customization part of it after using the XRv kit for a bit. If you have anymore pics lying around of the install that you could post I would appreciate it.
I'm curious about the lightbar that you used as well. I'm looking at the avaspark laser beam light bar but there really aren't very many suggestions as far as light bars go.
-
@loaffette The front light bar is just a constant headlight, not rgb, the rear is rgb and uses a Adruino Nano for different light patterns.
The front led strips canme from a dollar store much like the ones on Amazon, each pair of light strips run on 3v and are quite bright.
So you get 2 headlight strips and four cheap AAA cells from one wall switch light.

@lemur nice
How far do the diodes throw the light? (Basically, could I use with on a street without a handheld light or would I still need one?) -
@loaffette They're bright but doesn't thow a beam very far, I still use a helmet mounted bicycle headlight when I ride at night.
