Burning Man
-
While last year's Mud Man wasn't the best for taking out the wheel. The year prior was a blast. Between passing sand storms I was able to get a lot of good rides in. 240 miles of time out there in 2 weeks.
I found that there was two types of dirt surfing out there. The hard pack playa and the sand traps. Both were fun. The sand traps added a whole new adventure at speed. If you cut into one, you went from complete control over the board to actually feeling like you were on water as you sailed through it. No control and you had to just learn to go with the board. Such fun.
After a number of days learning how to surf playa, I decided to go for a speed record. Burning man only allows 10mph anywhere, but Shhh! I won't tell if you don't. I had figured out my course and eyed it for any holes or dips. Who wants to hit a sudden hump at 25+.
I was able to record a pass at 30.1mph on a stock GT.. on playa. Felt pretty good. The whole rest of the week was filled with a lot of confidence out there on the dirt and I became a runner for the camp to get supplies. Burning man can't really get upset at something they can't catch. Right?
I did fall once. Stupid slow speed sand trap fall. I don't recommend falling on playa. The alkaline of it gets in the cut and keeps it from healing. Kind of sucked, kind of didn't care for the rest of the trip.
All in all, great time.

@highspeeddirt i've brought my Pint out there a couple times, but mostly i end up leaving it at home because i don't want to have to haul it in every bar or camp i hit, and i'm worried about theft. that being said, i see more and more of them on-playa every year, and i'm thinking of bringing it and riding it this year. the first half of last year was incredible for riding, i'm sure. i saw pix of ABANDONED onewheels in the mud, which... omg... if i had seen one, i would've probably nabbed it, lol
oh, and the speed limit is 5mph, not 10 -- not that apparently anyone heeds it. this year is gonna be a total shitshow of high-speed ebike wrecks, i'm sure.

@franko 5...10...30.. same thing, right? Ha.
Ya, luckily I did not see any one wheels stuck in the mud but that thing went away when the rain started.
I got used to riding really slow, so I'd ask people if I could come play their games in their camp bar while staying on the wheel. Became fun to do dildo toss while rolling.

@highspeeddirt there should be a OW rider's meetup at the burn. (maybe there is??)
-
@franko there definitely was. It was fun, granted it happened during a dust storm.
-
@highspeeddirt there was? dang, i need to be on better lists, lol. i'd love to meet other riders. i'm all by my lonesome
cue sad violins
-
@franko ahh sad. Ya, if you get the book and look through, there was two, I believe and a park where they had ramps and all sorts of stuff.
-
@highspeeddirt i'm so old that i never read the WWW guide until we're in the Exodus line, lol. I have last year's here on my desk... my plan is to look through it for stuff that was cool LAST year, and then use that to search out the same camps and events for this year. hopefully it will come back, because that sounds fun.

@franko ha, ya I only ever grab one if someone else wants to go get one. And everyone I'd run into with a one wheel would tell me where the meetups were. I killed a battery sometimes twice a day I was on it so much.
